I enjoy photography, gardening and computer design. That's why my blogs are so enjoyable for me, because I can post the pictures (so many of gardens, landscapes, sunsets and of course grandchildren).

Nappanee Garden Club Meeting - DeFries Gardens

The Garden Club meeting for this month will be held Tuesday, July 19 at the DeFries Calendar Garden. We welcome visitors and interested gardeners.

The garden is located at 17477 County Road 46, 1.25 miles east of New Paris, IN. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful Calendar Garden, informal gardens, hiking trail, and canoe access to the Elkhart River. The site also provides a drinking fountain and modern restroom facilities. Following our garden visit we will stop in New Paris for ice cream. Plan to meet at the Thompson’s parking lot at 6:30 for car pooling. The park is open until 9:00 p.m. so there will be plenty of time to enjoy the beauty of this garden. Facebook people - DeFries Gardens has a site - check "like" and keep updated. COPPES COMMONS TOUR

The June gathering at the Coppes Commons proved to be a wonderful evening for everyone attending. Nearly 40 members and guests enjoyed a tour of the complex and got a first hand report of the plans, desires and possible concepts on how the entire building will eventually be put to use.

Thomas Mast purchased the facility and has been restoring and re-purposing it since 2009. Businesses are starting to take up residence in this historic facility. One of the new tenants to soon join the retail force of four current vendors is Rocket Science Ice Cream. Many of you have perhaps already enjoyed this unique treat. Other’s may be familiar with the trailer that is often parked at the Burger Dairy Store west of Nappanee.

Thomas has become quite an historian on the Coppes factory which started in the late 1800’s as a milling company, under the name of Coppes, Mutschler & Zook. The Mutschler brothers left and started their own kitchen factory and Zook stayed in the partnership until around 1914.

If you are on facebook you can go to the Coppes Commons page, check "like" and start getting updates and information on current happenings.

Thank you everyone for your attendance and for helping to make this a very memorable and enjoyable evening.

2011 Nappanee Home & Garden Annual Garden Tour

The garden walk was held Saturday, June 18th with five fantastic homes on the tour. Sadly to say, this was our lowest turnout ever.

Rentown held their walk the same day (it’s normally on a Friday); the Kosciusko County Master Gardeners moved their July walk to that Saturday. And, coupled with a few other events in nearby communities, we took the brunt.

However, all reports indicated our home owners very much enjoyed being a part of the walk this year and those who visited the sites were very complimentary.

We recognized our garden participants at the June Coppes Commons gathering. Their presence just added to the specialism of this delightful meeting.

The Charm of Simple Things - Saturday, June 19, 2010

What are the simple things that make your life so enjoyable?

Daisies picked for a vase
Pantry shelves lined with jars filled with summer bounty
Strawberry pie topped with fresh whipped cream
Sharing recipes with your neighbor

Just thinking of these brings smiles – a longing for our lives to move at a slower pace. These are the simple pleasures we enjoy, the pleasures we love to give and receive.

On Saturday, June 19, the Nappanee Home and Garden Club hopes you find simple pleasures with a personal invitation into the gardens and home of this year’s participants. Feel free to leisurely wander, ask questions, and above all. . . delight in the charm of simple things!
